Katharine Temple was born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland where she drew and painted from a young age. Every summer was spent in Ireland on the windswept, torturously cold but indescribably beautiful beaches of Donegal, playing with the friends of her Irish cousins – one of whom would turn out to be her future husband Patrick.
Katharine gained a Master of Arts at St Andrews University, and studied at the KLC School of Design, before working for one of Europe’s leading Design and Architecture studios, Katharine Pooley, in London. Over seventeen years she undertook projects around the world for an exceptional network of studio clients and worked extensively in New York, the French Riviera, Italy, Singapore, the Emirates and London, sketching and painting all the while.
In 2017 Katharine moved to Mountcharles, overlooking Donegal Bay, and found in the surrounding landscape, and it’s flora and fauna, a new immersive inspiration. Working ‘en plein air’, out in the landscape, and in her studio – a sheep shed on a hill overlooking Donegal Bay – she revisits the surroundings of those hazy childhood summers past. The colour and movement found in her large-scale watercolours, and in the brushstrokes of her lushly hued, highly textured, oil landscapes immediately transport the viewer to the stark beauty of the West of Ireland.
The occasional sheep wondering in, and the company of studio cat ‘Whiskers’ only add to the otherworldly feel.
Katharine is represented by The Trinity Gallery, Dublin
